Celebrate the 121st Anniversary of the Welsh Revival

On October 31st, 1904, when six young people came forward to declare Jesus Christ as Lord, Evan Roberts prayed aloud for six more to come forward also. When they did, they opened the floodgates of the Welsh Revival. On the 121st anniversary people will celebrate that moment where it took place — Moriah Chapel in Loughor, Wales — at the Refiners Revival. You can join the live stream.

120th Anniversary of the Welsh Revival

We're trying to set up a short tour of Wales to perform excerpts from our singing playSongs of Revival: Hungry After God Himself(www.SongsOfRevivalLive.com) about the Welsh and Asbury Revivals. 


We recently sent out this video to the contacts of a couple who have been prayer missionaries to Wales:

The job of Dick and Gladys Funnell (www.WalesAwakening.org) for almost 20 years has been praying for revival in Wales. They sent the video to all the contacts they've made over the past two decades, and there were zero bookings of a brief sample performance or of a meeting just to talk about bringing the whole production out in the spring. So he sent it out again. Nothing. 

 

Today Tim Mercaldo and I were talking about this, and he said the enemy of our souls doesn't want this to happen. When Tim said that, it dawned on me that it was during the fall that key turning points in the Welsh Revival happened… 120 years ago! In fact, we’ll be there 120 years after the month between Evan Roberts praying “Bend me!” at Blaenannerch and his first address to young people in Moriah Chapel, Loughor! If you haven't seen our play or studied the Welsh Revival that probably doesn't mean anything to you, but Evan Roberts was a key catalyst in one of the greatest revivals in history, and we'll be where it happened 120 years after the month that led up to his first public address, which led to 100,000 (at least) new believers within a few months and millions within a few years. 

 

So please join us in prayer for the open doors.

Hosting Headline Prayer Live

Originally Songs of Revival: Hungry After God Himself was titled Songs of the Welsh Revival. Then the Asbury Outpouring began. As I write we're one year after the 298th hour of continuous worship, testimony, preaching, Scripture reading, Salvation, and rededication. We knew we needed to incorporate that amazing story and open at the 50th anniversary of the 1970 Asbury Revival, but we didn't want to give up on the initial vision. So we folded the Welsh Revival into that story of freshmen at the anniversary praying for the Lord to visit again. On the original drafts we just mentioned that the Welsh Revival was quite significant and had many hallmarks of what the students were praying for. But after our debut of the complete "singing play," Dr. Vernon Whaley, who set up the performance, pointed out that the first (of nine) Asbury Revivals broke out during the Welsh Revival!

Shortly after my first article in my series on the importance of repentance in revival (#ImportanceOfRepentanceInRevival) Dutch Sheets posted a powerful teaching about what repentance is and how revival removes the veil which prevents people from repenting. As I was preparing an intro for his post on www.HeadlinePrayer.org, Joyce told me that Dutch Sheets read Part One of my series on Give Him 15! It seems Holy Spirit is awakening both of our ministries to the importance of repentance in this season.

When Joyce and I attended the National Gathering for Prayer and Repentance I prayed I'd get a chance to thank Dutch for reading my article. I also wanted to give him a link to my portrayal of Rees Howells. I reported earlier how I'd offered to write and perform a monologue for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Intercessors for America. I was given a list of people that could be good, which included Rees Howells. We prayed over it and felt clear that was where we were being directed. I performed in the morning, and after lunch Dutch spoke and used a long illustration about Rees Howells! John Beckett, who helped steer me to Howells was at the next table over, and we were poking each other like school children! When IFA CEO Dave Kubal told Dutch about the performance he said, "No way!" Then he told how, as he was preparing he kept hearing Holy Spirit whisper, "Rees. Rees."


As soon as we walked up to the Museum of the Bible for the National Gathering for Prayer and Repentance, there was Dutch in line to get in! He graciously accepted my link and reiterated that he wanted to share more of my work. Praise the Lord!

Yesterday Intercessors for America ran my article "Seeking God for Revival," the first in a series which will cover the importance of repentance in the 1970 Asbury Revival, the 1904–1905 Welsh Revival, and the 2023 Asbury Outpouring: 


Lord, thank You for leading souls to repentance at Asbury in 1970 so that revival could flow then, and also now, during the 2023 Asbury Outpouring!


Though not all repentance leads to revival, you can’t have revival without repentance.

I recently did a workshop in Albuquerque, NM, (my 43rd state in which I've performed and/or taught). Afterward people told me how encouraged they were by things I said in the Q/A following the workshop about how the Lord is moving in NYC. I mentioned that Tony Cairnes of the Values Research Institute told a gathering that in the wake of 9/11 there was so much church growth that there have been more churches per capita than since the 1940s. I told them about the the work of Christian Union on the campuses of all eight Ivy League universities. They were curious why more people don't know about it, so I thought I'd post the following draft I started in March...

Every year since 2007 I've had the opportunity and privilege of teaching a workshop at Princeton University. This year I was told by a friend in my discipleship group that the cemetery was not to be missed. So I trudged through the snow to President's Row, where I found, among many luminaries, the tombstone that drew me most: Jonathan Edwards. He was the third president of Princeton, though he was only in office a few months before a smallpox epidemic swept the town. Being a man of science as well as what some consider to be the greatest theologian in American history, he was inoculated against the disease. Unfortunately, in 1758 the inoculation went awry, and his body was ravaged by the disease, killing him in his prime.

I knew of Jonathan Edwards not because he presided over Princeton (a surprise to me), but because he was at the heart of the Great Awakening of the 1740s. There have been a number of Great Awakenings in the US. These were periods in which there were extensive revivals pulling our nation back to the God in Whom we trust.

It was interesting to me to stand at Edwards' tomb on what feels like the eve of our next Great Awakening. The largest student body group on the Princeton campus is the Christian Union. The last I knew they had over 400 students there and a presence on all eight Ivy League campuses. When I spoke on a panel at their Congress on Faith and Action, hosted by Harvard, it blew me away to see about five hundred students from all eight campuses worshiping the Lord with all of their might, not only in their vibrant praise songs, but also in their life commitments to use their prestigious degrees to serve the Kingdom of God around the world.

Now Christian Union is moving beyond the ivy covered walls into the nation at large, challenging all to join the Great Experiment. Joyce and I were a part of it in the fall and it brought our spiritual lives new vitality.

There are five commitments in the Great Experiment:
1. Spending 30 minutes every morning reading the Bible and praying, and also spending time in the evening doing the same ( Luke 18:1-8).

2. Consciously repenting every day of all known sin and putting away everything that may hinder our devotion to Christ ( Hebrews 12:1, 2).

3. Seeking God in the morning for the thing the Holy Spirit most desires for us to do that day, writing it down and following up that day ( Psalm 143:10).

4. Looking to share Christ every day and speaking about Christ publicly ( Acts 1:8).

5. (For those participating in groups) Meeting once a week for encouragement and accountability (in-person, skype, or conference call), and staying in touch during the week through whatever works best, e.g. group text, email, etc. ( Hebrews 10:24-27).
We experienced such amazing stories of the Lord's guidance through this process, and through the group gatherings heard that the Lord was at work in mighty ways in other lives as well. Sign up for the next Great Experiment at www.DayAndNight.org.

These commitments were employed  by Jeannine Brabon, a student at Asbury College, in 1969 with a handful of friends. Then each of those students invited a handful of friends to participate in a new group, and then the whole campus was invited to sign up, and about 200 did. Then one day those students shared in chapel what the Lord was doing in their lives, and it went for eight days straight, 24 hours a day. The presence of the Lord was so thick that no one wanted to leave!

With the brightest students in the land leading the way at Princeton and all of the Ivy League colleges and beyond taking part in these commitments, who knows how soon it will be before the next Great Awakening will sweep our land. We certainly need it. Let's pray for it day and night!
