A new film about Eric Liddell is being released on November 3 in select theaters and online simultaneously. I'll be fielding questions after two of the screenings in NYC. <br><span class="s1"><br></span><span class="s1">This is an answer to a prayer I've been praying since 1981 when&nbsp;</span><i>Chariots of Fire </i>won four Academy Awards. In the year 2000 I started researching for&nbsp; <i><a href="http://www.richdrama.com/Updates">Beyond the Chariots</a></i>, my one-man play that tells the rest of the <i>Chariots of Fire</i>&nbsp;story from the perspective of Eric Liddell. My performance of the play at the Singapore Expo is now available: <a href="http://www.richdrama.com/BtC">www.RichDrama.com/BtC</a>. <br><br> Since I first started my research at the Eric Liddell Centre in Edinburgh I've tracked no less than seven attempts (including one of my own) to tell more of Eric Liddell's story on the big screen, so I'm overjoyed that this one finally made it across the finish line... but being so tied to the story, I feel let down on certain fronts. <br><br> Before I get to that, there is plenty to love about&nbsp; <i><a href="https://onwingsofeaglesfilm.wordpress.com/">On Wings of Eagles</a>.&nbsp;</i>I'll try to keep the spoilers to a minimum, but there are a few things I just have to mention.... <br><br><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float:left;margin-right:1em;text-align:left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align:center;"><a href="https://onwingsofeaglesfilm.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/fiennesgangerunbridge.jpg" style="clear:left;margin-bottom:1em;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;"><img border="0" height="112" src="https://onwingsofeaglesfilm.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/fiennesgangerunbridge.jpg" width="200"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align:center;">Joseph Fiennes portrays Eric Liddell <br> coaching his track team from the <br> Tientsin Anglo-Chinese College.<br> Xu Niu is far left.</td></tr></tbody></table> Though I did submit for the role, I'm completely thrilled with Joseph Fiennes' portrayal of one of my lifelong heroes. He captured the good natured charm and indefatigable joy I've picked up in the biographies and interviews with more than a dozen people who remember Liddell. <br><i><br></i><i>On Wings of Eagles</i> is a total reworking of a film entitled <i>The Last Race</i>, which was released in Hong Kong and China last year. Producers Jim Green and Mark Bacino told me they took the raw footage and have reworked the storyline and introduced a narrator, the older voice of Xu Niu (played by Shawn Dou on screen and voiced by the older Bruce Locke). Though I haven't seen <i>The Last Race</i>, from descriptions I've heard I believe this is a much better film for Western audiences. <br><br><div class="separator" style="clear:both;text-align:center;"></div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float:right;margin-left:1em;text-align:right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align:center;"><a href="https://uniim1.shutterfly.com/ng/services/mediarender/THISLIFE/001089509830/media/113419275389/small/1508531859/enhance" style="clear:right;margin-bottom:1em;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;"><img border="0" src="https://uniim1.shutterfly.com/ng/services/mediarender/THISLIFE/001089509830/media/113419275389/small/1508531859/enhance" width="200"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align:center;">After my performance in Hong Kong<br> on 08/08/08,&nbsp;the opening day of the <br> Beijing Olympics with Leone and<br> Jim &quot;Jamey&quot; Hudson Taylor, III,<br> Chuck Allison, Steve Wible, and<br> H. K. Cheng.</td></tr></tbody></table> Xu Niu is, from what I can tell, a fictionalized runner on Liddell's track team at the Tientsin Anglo-Chinese College. He follows Liddell throughout the story. In my play I also have a fictional student of Liddell's in a pivotal role. I call him Mai Ker. An actual former student of Liddell, H. K. Cheng, saw a couple of my performances of the play in Hong Kong, and after one of those performances he was kind enough to do an interview, which <a href="http://www.richdrama.com/Updates">we hope to release soon</a>. I asked him if the fictional Mai Ker was similar to any of Liddell's actual students. He immediately thought of a classmate! <br><br> As a young runner I was inspired by Eric Liddell the athlete. <a href="http://www.richdrama.com/MyPassion">As a Christian</a> I loved how <i>Chariots of Fire</i> showed Liddell refusing to run on a Sunday in the 100m, where he might have proven that he was the fastest man alive. Instead he trained for the 400m and broke the world record at that distance. <br><br> One of the things I love most about <i>On Wings of Eagles</i> is that it shows Liddell turning away from fame and fortune that was promised after his Olympic success to minister to the people who nearly killed his family shortly after his birth during the Boxer Rebellion. Jacob Shams in his otherwise excellent <a href="https://christiancinema.com/news/on-wings-of-eagles-chariot-of-fire-s-eric-liddell-was-more-than-an-olympian">review of the new film</a> gets one thing wrong. He says, &quot;... <i>after his racing days were over</i>, Liddell returned to the home of his birth, China...&quot; Liddell's racing days were far from over! He broke the world record at the Paris Olympics when he was 22, and he left for China the very next year. <a href="http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/mailverify?uri=TheSwinglesDramaticDevelopments&amp;loc=en_US">I'll post more on Liddell's athletic accomplishments in China later</a>, but the short version is that during a meet in China hosted by Japan for the Emperor's coronation, Liddell tied some of the winning times set in the 1928 Olympics earlier that year. <br><br><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float:left;margin-right:1em;text-align:left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align:center;"><a href="https://onwingsofeaglesfilm.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/screen-shot-2016-12-02-at-6-37-21-pm.png?w=318&amp;h=179" style="clear:left;margin-bottom:1em;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;"><img border="0" height="112" src="https://onwingsofeaglesfilm.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/screen-shot-2016-12-02-at-6-37-21-pm.png?w=318&amp;h=179" width="200"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align:center;">Liddell (Fiennes) races against<br> Chen Quan (Simon Twu).</td></tr></tbody></table> Though the new film&nbsp;never shows Liddell running in his prime, there are two races, and in both Fiennes does a great job of showing him run beyond what his meager rations should allow. At one point we see him sharing his rations with children, which is a beautiful picture of who he was. At another point eggshells are being ground, and, indeed, they would add shells to meals to get every bit of protein they could. Doctors in the camp told Liddell they weren't eating enough for the youth to take place in athletics, but Liddell said without their bodies engaged, their souls would wither. <br><br><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float:right;margin-left:1em;text-align:right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align:center;"><a href="https://onwingsofeaglesfilm.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/fiennesteacheschemistry.jpg" style="clear:right;margin-bottom:1em;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;"><img border="0" height="102" src="https://onwingsofeaglesfilm.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/fiennesteacheschemistry.jpg" width="200"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align:center;">Fiennes portrays Liddell as a science<br> teacher at the <br> Tientsin Anglo-Chinese College.</td></tr></tbody></table> The new film is shot in China, in Tianjin (spelled Tientsin when the story takes place), where Liddell taught science (not English as Shams says in his review), and in Weifang (spelled Weihsien when the story takes place), in the actual compound where Eric Liddell and his fellow Allied prisoners spent the end of World War II. There are a couple of scenes summarizing Liddell's life as a teacher and missionary before it cuts to him on board a ship with his family before it disembarks, carrying his wife Flo and daughters Patricia and Heather to their family home in Toronto. Flo (Elizabeth Arends, who made no attempt at a Canadian accent) was also pregnant with Maureen, now Maureen Moore. After seeing one of my performances of <i>Beyond the Chariots,</i> she described that first trip as being&nbsp;in a cab with the windows rolled up. I was blessed to see the photo of Maureen as a baby take such a prominent place in the storyline, as Liddell was separated from his family during his final years. <br><br> The farewell on the ship is a scene that may have been inspired by the Prologue in my favorite biography on Liddell,&nbsp; <i>Pure Gold,</i>&nbsp;by David McCasland, who saw my play and set up a tour of Tianjin for us <i>.&nbsp;</i><a href="http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/mailverify?uri=TheSwinglesDramaticDevelopments&amp;loc=en_US">I'll post more on that later</a>.&nbsp;In both the biography and the movie, it is quite a moving scene. <br><br> It's not long (in the film and in reality) before Pearl Harbor is bombed and citizens of all Allied nations are put into internment camps. <a href="http://www.blog.richdrama.com/2006/02/laughter-from-27th-floor.html">I performed my play</a> for <a href="http://www.blog.richdrama.com/search/label/Hudson%20Taylor%20descendents">Jim &quot;Jamey&quot; Hudson Taylor III</a>, the great grandson of the prominent missionary to China.&nbsp;Jamey, his three siblings and his grandfather were in the internment camp&nbsp;with &quot;Uncle Eric,&quot; as all the students called him.&nbsp; After two of the three performances of my play Jamey saw in Hong Kong, he described how Uncle Eric was a father figure to so many children who were separated from their families. The new film captures this, in part with a sign Jamey Taylor mentioned to me. There were so many visits to Uncle Eric's flat that his roommate put up a sign indicating &quot;Uncle Eric is IN&quot; or &quot;Uncle Eric is OUT.&quot; <br><br><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float:left;margin-right:1em;text-align:left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://tribalvillage.co.jp/images/shigeokobayashi01.png" style="clear:left;margin-bottom:1em;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;"><img border="0" src="http://tribalvillage.co.jp/images/shigeokobayashi01.png" height="200" width="148"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align:center;">Yoshinori Yumoto <br> (Shigeo Kobayashi)</td></tr></tbody></table> There's a moment in the film that a Japanese officer, Yoshinori Yumoto (played by Shigeo Kobayashi), interrupts a wedding ceremony that Uncle Eric is conducting. He takes the wedding rings from the couple. Though it's a fictional element of the story, it reminded me of how Jamey told me the Japanese put labels on people and things that read, &quot;Property of the Japanese.&quot; <br><br> The couple is separated when they're brought into the internment camp, but the new groom insists on married housing. Yoshinori Yumoto asks for proof that they are married, but of course he's taken their rings. Uncle Eric says, &quot; What God has joined together let no man put asunder.&quot; Yoshinori Yumoto tells him, &quot; My emperor is the god here.&quot; That much is in the trailer you can see below. It's Uncle Eric's response that is one of my favorite moments in the film on a number of different levels. I'm planning to talk about that after the NYC screenings. <br><br><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float:right;margin-left:1em;text-align:right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align:center;"><a href="https://uniim1.shutterfly.com/ng/services/mediarender/THISLIFE/001089509830/media/113419370243/medium/1508535186/enhance" style="clear:left;margin-bottom:1em;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;"><img border="0" height="98" src="https://uniim1.shutterfly.com/ng/services/mediarender/THISLIFE/001089509830/media/113419370243/medium/1508535186/enhance" width="200"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align:center;">From Stephen Metcalf's interview in<br><i>Olympic Hero in China</i>.</td></tr></tbody></table> I love that there is an allusion in the new film to praying for their captors. Uncle Eric taught often on the <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2B5">Sermon on the Mount</a>, and dedicates the better part of a chapter to it in his book <i>The Disciplines of the Christian Life</i>. In&nbsp; <i>Olympic Hero in China</i>, the documentary I helped create and for which I do the English narration, Stephen Metcalf, who was a young runner in the internment camp, said that one day Uncle Eric was teaching them the passage from the Sermon on the Mount that says, &quot; <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2B5%3A44&amp;version=ESV">Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you</a>....&quot; Metcalf said that Uncle Eric said, &quot;'Prayer changes the whole situation. When you hate somebody, you're self-centered. When you pray for someone you become God-centered.' And so he said, 'I've been getting up early and praying for the Japanese.' And he challenged us to pray for the Japanese.&quot; Metcalf took up the challenge, and after carrying Uncle Eric's coffin to the grave he said, &quot;I promised God that if I came out alive, I would go to Japan as a missionary like Eric.&quot; Metcalf served as a missionary to Japan for 40 years.&nbsp; </div>
<br> The Music Department of <i>On Wings of Eagles</i>&nbsp;had a high bar set for them since Vangelis won the Oscar for his soundtrack to <i>Chariots of Fire</i>. My brother and I listened to the record the night before every cross-country and track meet. The new film's orchestrator, Steve Greer, arranged for&nbsp;a live orchestra in Macedonia to perform the music, and I think they did a wonderful job. There were two songs in particular that brought joy to my heart.<br><br><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float:left;margin-right:1em;text-align:left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align:center;"><a href="https://uniim1.shutterfly.com/ng/services/mediarender/THISLIFE/001089509830/media/113419392663/medium/1508535531/enhance" style="clear:right;margin-bottom:1em;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;"><img border="0" height="98" src="https://uniim1.shutterfly.com/ng/services/mediarender/THISLIFE/001089509830/media/113419392663/medium/1508535531/enhance" width="200"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align:center;">From Maureen Liddell Moore's <br> interview in<br><i>Olympic Hero in China</i>.</td></tr></tbody></table> The first was &quot; The Ninety and Nine.&quot; In <i>Olympic Hero in China</i>, Maureen tells the story beautifully of how, as a young boy, her father would always ask to sing that hymn about <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2B18%3A12-14&amp;version=ESV">the story Jesus told of the shepherd leaving the 99 sheep to go after the one who is lost</a>. Young Eric would always cry when the family sang it. Maureen said, &quot;...it helped me to understand that even as a young child my father had a strong, strong desire to reach out and touch people with the message that they were all loved and they would all be safe and they could all come home.&quot;<br><br> The second song that moved me was &quot;Be Still My Soul.&quot; It was Uncle Eric's favorite hymn, and the new film introduces it early and it has a prominent place in the end.<br><br> This brings me to my disappointments with the film. Whenever a story is taken out of history and told as a movie there must be choices to fictionalize certain elements in order to make it work in the format of cinema. Sometimes those choices upset those who know the real story well. After a performance of <i>Beyond the Chariots</i>&nbsp;in Milwaukee, an audience member Lucy Storch gave me two letters she received from Uncle Eric's sister, Jenny Somerville. She said, &quot; The girl playing myself (Cheryl Campbell) was nothing like me! I was never against my brother running....The scriptwriter (Colin Welland, who won the Oscar for it) said you need a conflict in a film, so I was the conflict!&quot;<br><br><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float:right;margin-left:1em;text-align:right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://content.screencast.com/users/RichSwingle/folders/Jing/media/da2134d8-94ca-4325-9dec-2ae2cc421950/00000467.png" style="clear:left;margin-bottom:1em;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;"><img border="0" src="http://content.screencast.com/users/RichSwingle/folders/Jing/media/da2134d8-94ca-4325-9dec-2ae2cc421950/00000467.png" height="136" width="200"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align:center;">With the eldest Liddell daughters and<br> their husbands after one of my<br> performances in Toronto.</td></tr></tbody></table> Though the use of &quot;Be Still My Soul&quot; at the end of <i>On Wings of Eagles</i> has its own artistic beauty, I missed the beauty of what actually happened. Uncle Eric's middle daughter, Heather Ingham, told me the family still has the slip of paper upon which her father wrote down the hymn's title while he lay dying in the internment camp's makeshift hospital. That slip of paper was delivered to someone in the Salvation Army band (alluded to in the film by a trumpet we see lying around in one scene). Prisoners were allowed to bring a few personal items into the camp, and band members had each brought their instrument. They played that hymn outside Uncle Eric's window on at least one of his final days. <a href="http://www.richdrama.com/Updates">I'll post more about the Salvation Army band later</a>.<br><br> At a certain point in the new film, Xu Niu's subtitles indicate that he used the word hell as an expletive. I was sorry to see this because hell is a real place, and no matter how the cultural narrative downplays it, it is not temporary or benign. There is nothing in Scripture that indicates it is a lukewarm <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Revelation%2B21%3A8">lake of fire</a>. Though the use of the word was used to give shape to Xu Niu's character arc, I think it's a shame that the word was used in a film that should attract impressionable youths.<br><br> Early on in the film we see Uncle Eric looking the other way when a bribe being given. Even if such a moment occurred, with only 90 minutes to flesh out his life, I think it was a very poor choice to show him benefiting from an illegal act without speaking against it.<br><br> In another moment Uncle Eric is forced to run on a Sunday. It is true that he eventually decided to referee games on Sundays in the internment camp because, without his presence, fights were breaking out. But to hear the challenge without fleshing out the mental anguish that would have gone into such a choice is wrong. I hope audiences reflect on the fact that the stakes were much higher than the personal glory Uncle Eric walked away from at the Paris Olympics.<br><br><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float:left;margin-right:1em;text-align:left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align:center;"><a href="https://onwingsofeaglesfilm.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/owoe_churchorgan.jpg" style="clear:left;margin-bottom:1em;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;"><img border="0" height="102" src="https://onwingsofeaglesfilm.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/owoe_churchorgan.jpg" width="200"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align:center;">Liddell (Fiennes) in the church of the<br> internment camp, which was<br> originally a seminary.</td></tr></tbody></table><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="Message"></a>My biggest problem with the film is a single sentence. Xu Niu describes &quot;Uncle Eric's message: His faith in the essential goodness of mankind touched the edge of my mortal soul.&quot; After spending the entire film showing, often in very creative ways, that every good work Eric Liddell did was through the inspiration and by the power of his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, this sentence reverses and undermines it all! As a Christian Uncle Eric most certainly did not have faith in the essential goodness of mankind. He believed, as all orthodox Christians do, in <a href="http://www.richdrama.com/MyPassion">the fallen nature of mankind and our need for a Savior</a>.<br><br> At the moment that Xu Niu says, &quot;Uncle Eric's message...&quot; we're seeing a tight shot of the Cross. It is my prayer that viewers see the statement in the full Truth of that image: Uncle's Eric had faith that through the Cross we all have hope of goodness. As <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Peter%202%3A24">1 Peter 2:24</a> says, &quot; He (Jesus Christ) himself bore our sins in his body on the tree (the Cross), that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.&quot;<br><br> If people miss that, I pray they'll see the statement about Uncle Eric's message as an observation by someone on his way to seeing his need for a Savior.<br><br> If you see your need for a Savior, you can reach out right now to the only One who bridges the gap between fallen humans and a Holy God: Jesus Christ. That was very special for our group, and after seeing our recording she wrote, &quot; Thanks very much for this generous act of prayer on our behalf.&quot; <br><br> In <i>The Acts</i> one of the characters describes how a violent wind entered the room where the followers of Jesus were gathered on Pentecost. Just hours later, Commander Janet Ashcraft was building upon the theme of her husband, Commander Larry Ashcraft, and bringing home the theme of the whole retreat: Bold Action. At that moment a violent wind swept through the open sides and back of the auditorium, designed for summer events. This is the way Colonel Richard Munn described it: <br><blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="background-color:white;color:rgb(29, 33, 41);font-family:&quot;helvetica&quot;, &quot;arial&quot;, sans-serif;font-size:14px;line-height:19.32px;">...quite suddenly a violent wind disrupted the scene in Chamberlain Hall, flags crashing, music stands cascading, music sheets swirling around the room. What a visual aid, then again, just maybe, a sign - Swoneky Division: Bold faith. I love it.</span></blockquote><div style="text-align:right;"></div>

The next day Joyce and I got to visit the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/arkencounter/">Ark Encounter</a>, a replica of the ship that carried Noah and his family to safety after the worldwide flood described in <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis%2B6-7&amp;version=ESV">Genesis 6-7</a>. &nbsp; The Lord gave the specifications to Noah in cubits, which is the measurement from a man's elbow to the tip of his longest finger. There were twelve possible lengths the creators of the Ark considered, and they went with 20.1 inches per cubit. That makes it 510' long, 85' wide, and 51' tall. That took 3.3 million board feet of wood, making it the largest wooden structure in the world... today. There's a display that mentions many of the flood stories from around the world. The Ark is the only structure that actually could have survived a worldwide flood. <br><br> Another display shows photos of Mars. Scientists point to many features of the landscape that indicate Mars had a worldwide flood. They pointed out that if a worldwide flood were not mentioned in the Bible scientists would all conclude that there was one here, too. But that would wash away one of evolution's primary tenets: that the striations we see in places like the Grand Canyon were developed over millions of years. Creation scientists believe those layers were created as the floodwaters rose. It makes a lot more sense to believe striations would come from a catastrophic event rather than over great epochs of time, during which erosion would blend layers together, and in fact we have evidence of this at Mt. St. Helens, where identical striations were created in a matter of hours after its eruption in 1980. <br><br> The entire display is very well thought out, down to the number of bats on board! The Lord sent Noah two of each kind, male and female. Creators of the Ark take the word &quot;kind&quot; to indicate any group of animals that can produce offspring with an animal of the opposite sex within that kind. So they only account for two dogs on the Ark, since all varieties of dogs can interbreed. The Lord also sent Noah seven pairs of clean animals and flying creatures. Since there is no scientific proof that all bats can interbreed they have 75 varieties of bats on board. I guess I should add that they're not real, though there's a limited zoo on the premises we didn't have time to see. <br><br> Advances in science are making it more and more clear that there had to be a Creator. For more on this watch our friend <a href="http://whoisthefish.weebly.com/human-translations/english-who-is-the-fish">Eric Metaxas</a>' talk, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/prageru/videos/909352269107630/">Science and God</a>. The Ark Encounter opened on July 7, and by the time we visited, less than two months later, there have been over 100,000 visitors discovering these facts secular media would rather ignore. <br><br><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z8DPpkOYJDI/V8ibqEk_DLI/AAAAAAAANwM/0sc63aWmI3U3wQjH2o81WPJkg-NOmJKBACLcB/s1600/20160828_131738.jpg" style="clear:right;float:right;margin-bottom:1em;margin-left:1em;"><img border="0" height="112" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z8DPpkOYJDI/V8ibqEk_DLI/AAAAAAAANwM/0sc63aWmI3U3wQjH2o81WPJkg-NOmJKBACLcB/s200/20160828_131738.jpg" width="200"></a>There we encountered four different friends! class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">Just before boarding my flight to Chicago on Friday I got a call saying that there was a chance that my Saturday night performance would be switched to Sunday night so we'd have more time to prep. &nbsp; So I got on the phone with the airline and explained that the only reason I was flying to Chicago was for that performance, so if it was switched to Sunday night, could my Sunday morning flight to NYC be moved to Monday morning. &nbsp; The woman said that I'd have to pay to make that change. &nbsp;I prayed and called again. &nbsp; The next attendant gladly made the switch without hesitation or fee.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div>
</div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div><br class="webkit-block-placeholder"></div>
<div> So here were the divine appointments that happened on my leisurely Sunday and Monday that wouldn't have occurred had the weather been nice on Saturday: </div>
<div><br></div><div> I got to attend a great Sunday school class and two marvelous sermons, all three of which I blogged (6/13 and 14). &nbsp; And all three of which inform the devotions and sermon I'm going to share at MasterWorks on our identity. </div>
<div><br></div><div> I got to spend more time with Norm Kapp, sharing my experiences in the extra decade I've had touring like his daughter is. </div>
<div><br></div><div> I got to visit the wonderful Billy Graham Center Museum, where there's a display by Timothy Botts, who I performed with in St. Louis years ago. &nbsp; He speaks as he creates his calligraphy. </div>
<div><br></div><div> When I got to the dinner for the Summer Celebration that brought me to Chicago I walked up to the tent full of strangers and prayed that the Lord would lead me to the right seat. &nbsp;Within seconds a fellow from Romania hailed me. &nbsp;I shared what little Romanian&nbsp; <a href="http://richdrama.com/MWF">MasterWorks</a>&nbsp;student Krisztina Fekete had taught me, and then the gentleman introduced me to Herbert Carlburg, pictured here. &nbsp; He was withdrawn from the Cheefoo School, founded by Hudson Taylor, a few days before the Japanese took over the campus and declared everything and everyone there the property of Japan. &nbsp;Later, they shipped all the students off to the Weihsien internment camp, where Eric Liddell spent his last years. &nbsp;Herbert's family took him further west until the Japanese eventually pushed them to India. &nbsp;Since Hudson Taylor came into our conversation someone said, &quot; One of his great-granddaughters attends our church.&quot; &nbsp; Before we knew it, Ruth Kerns, pictured here, came over and explained that she prayed from afar for her four cousins who were interned with Eric Liddell, two of which have spoken after performances of&nbsp; <a href="http://richdrama.com/BeyondtheChariots">Beyond the Chariots</a>: Rev. Dr. Jim Hudson Taylor, III, who passed away last March, and Mary Previte. </div>
<div><br></div><div> While telling some folks after the evening sermon how much I appreciated the Billy Sunday display at the Billy Graham Center Library one of the women I was talking to said, &quot;I'll never forget hearing him preach.&quot; &nbsp; She remembers that he put one leg up on a chair...until he threw it for emphasis. &nbsp; It landed quite near her, which terrified her. &nbsp; But I have the impression she's walked with the Lord ever since. :) </div>
<div><br></div><div> Today's flight home to NYC was also filled with divine appointments, including a fascinating O'Hare to Port Authority conversation about, among other things, this truly remarkable and miraculous weekend. </div>

Tad will be 90 years old next month and is still farming! <br><br> We connected with him through Mary Previte, the great-granddaughter of Hudson Taylor, founder of the China Inland Mission. She was a member of the New Jersey State Congress and was asked to speak at a Memorial Day service for the China-Berma Veterans Association. She had been a 12-year old girl in the internment camp, when the seven paratroopers dropped into a field nearby. That was Tad's second jump. The first was in active duty over Burma. They didn't know how many Japanese guards there would be facing them, but after 1,500 internees rushed the gate, the guards lowered their weapons and went back to their barracks. <br><br> After telling that story to the veterans Mary asked, &quot; Are any of my heroes here today?&quot; The room went silent. That began a search which connected her to all six American jumpers or their widows. The one Chinese jumper, Eddie Wong, is believed to be in China, if still alive. Tad was the first living member of the team that Mary contacted. <br><br> We connected with Mary through her brother, the late <a href="http://richdrama.com/JHTIII">Rev. Jim Hudson Taylor, III</a>. He gave me permission to post it here. <br><br><blockquote> I've attached some of my thoughts I wrote down about Dr. Taylor. I wrote this exactly 1 week before his passing. I was thinking about him a lot once the news of his decline in health hit home, and was inspired to write my thoughts down. I'm sure my brief descriptions are echoed by those who have encountered him and know him much more closely than me. And, I do hope reading the reflections is a blessing and reminder of the goodness of God's grace. Of course my point was not to exalt Dr. Taylor as the Bible clearly teaches that we are equal as brothers/sisters in Christ. But the Bible also teaches that we are to give honor when it is due (Romans 13:7). And, we should never take for granted the special people God places in our lives. <br><br> REFLECTIONS on Dr. James Hudson Taylor III <br> By Dan Tupps (March 13, 2009) <br><br> As many of you know, Dr. Taylor, the great-grandson of Hudson Taylor, is suffering from the late stages of liver cancer. We’ve been praying diligently for him and his family during this difficult time. Lately I have been reflecting on my brief experiences and encounters I have had with Dr. Taylor over the past few years. Here are my reflections below… <br><br> There are few people I have known in life who I can say with pure enthusiasm that he/she is a man/woman of God. There are many, many people I know who are strong Christians; who love God with all their heart and seek to do his will, and have influenced my life and spiritual journey. But few possess a unique quality that radiates something extraordinarily different; someone you know is so close with God that He is seen in and through that person. There are few people who, after being in his/her presence, you know you have been blessed because he/she radiates the glory of the Lord (just like Moses in Exodus 34:29). Dr. Taylor is one of those people. <br><br> Dr. Taylor is one of the most unassuming men you’ll ever meet. He is not a man of great stature or size. He’s not loud, super outgoing, and doesn’t have much charisma. In a crowd he is not the life of the party and certainly would not want to be the center of attention. He is quiet (as in not loud or boisterous), gentle, and always has a smile. From a worldly perspective there’s not much about him that would strike you as possessing a tremendous leadership skill or trait. However, 2 Corinthians 6:6 describes Dr. Taylor perfectly. He is a man full of “purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love.” He is such a pure man that just being in his presence inspires you to want to be a better person, a holy person, a righteous person, someone who always seeks to do good. He is also full of understanding. He is never critical even when there may be something legitimate to criticize. He is so patient and kind. I’m sure he’s been angry, but if those who know him the most were to tell me that they honestly have never seen him angry, I would believe them! He is also a man who is clearly full of the Holy Spirit, not in a particularly extroverted way, but in a subtle and gentle way with a quiet and loving spirit and with godly wisdom. And to sum it all up, he is a man full of sincere love; he is a man who just loves people, faults and all. This is the defining characteristic that sets him above the rest: a genuine ability to love fallen, sinful, deceiving, disobedient, rebellious, obnoxious, ungodly, stubborn, impatient, ignorant, arrogant, you name it people. He truly loves others in the way God loves us. <br><br> I guess another trait to describe Dr. Taylor and why he is a man of God is that he is extraordinarily humble. He is the definition of what it means to be a humble servant. His humbleness was evident to me in a few different ways. First, he was present on a few occasions when I preached in the adult/Chinese congregation at our church. And, to hear him reinforce the points of my sermon and thank God for a message I gave was so humbling for me, to say the least. It should be ME who should be saying, “Praise God for Dr. Taylor’s message today!” He’s spent so many years in ministry and has wisdom beyond what I may ever grasp. But for him to say that for me is a type of humility I will possibly never know. <br><br> Secondly, when I first moved to Hong Kong I met with Dr. Taylor’s son, Pastor Jamie, about once every other month for mentoring. After Jamie moved to Taiwan, Dr. Taylor agreed to meet with me. However, we only had the opportunity to meet on a few occasions. I was always full of questions and wanted to learn from this godly man and soak in some of his wisdom. But it turned out he was the one asking ME questions! Asking me my thoughts on ministry and how to reach the younger generation for Christ. At the time I felt I should be learning from him, not the other way around! But looking back, I learned something from those few brief meetings that means so much to me today: what it means to be a humble servant; someone who is always learning, growing, and encouraging others and coming alongside them and gently guiding them along. <br><br> Finally, whenever I would email Dr. Taylor I would of course address him as such. However, he would always end his replies simply with “Jim.” Now, to some of you that may not mean anything. But for me, it speaks volumes. Knowing that he grew up in a culture where status, name, and rank as elder requires respect, the natural way to address him would be “Dr. Taylor” or “Pastor Taylor” or at the very LEAST “Uncle James”. These are titles that he not only deserved, but were certainly earned through years of study, hard work, and experience in life. And, in my culture for someone who has such a position or title of respect to say, “Please, call me ___ …” means that person respects you back and is a sign of humility. It would have been one thing for him to reply with “James”, but “Jim” is even more informal; it’s a nickname! So, piecing all this together, for him to end his emails with his nickname, Jim, is in a way saying, “I’m not requiring you to address me by my rightfully respectful title. Instead, I respect YOU enough to say that we are on an equal level as two brothers in Christ.” I can’t explain enough how a simple phrase at the end of an email like “Your brother in His service, Jim” speaks volumes of this man’s humbleness. <br><br> On a final note, I’ll never forget two things in my encounters with Dr. Taylor. First, my wife, Geeta, and I had the privilege to have Dr. Taylor pray a blessing for us when we first started serving at HKMBC. To have such a man of God pray for us as we were initiated into ministry in Hong Kong is such a blessing and moment both Geeta and I will never forget. Secondly, I found out this past year that Dr. Taylor and I share the same birthday – August 12. From here on out as I celebrate my birthdays, I hope to always remember that exactly 50 years before I was born a man of God, who I had the privilege and honor to meet, was born and served God faithfully “in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love.” </blockquote></div></div></div>

Jim Hudson Taylor, III, died on March 20. <br><br> I knew his health was poor in recent days, but I had no idea how hard I'd cry when I read the news of his passing. <br><br> He's the great grandson of <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null">Hudson Taylor</a>, and he's seen my play <a href="http://richdrama.com/BeyondtheChariots">Beyond the Chariots</a> all three times that I've performed it in Hong Kong, and he spoke after it twice. He was in the internment camp with Eric Liddell, which is the setting for the last third of the play. The first time he saw it--before we'd been introduced--he said, &quot; It was softball. We didn't have enough room to play baseball.&quot; He and his wonderful wife, Leone, sat with us for two hours talking about how to make the play more accurate and get it into China during the Olympics. <br><br> In fact he opened up doors for all of our performances in China in '07 ( <a href="http://richswingle.blogspot.com/">RichSwingle.blogspot.com</a> archives for January '07), during the Beijing Olympics ( <a href="http://richdrama.com/NewsBlog">RichDrama.com/NewsBlog</a> archives for August '08), and he urged Good News Communications International to hire me to write our documentary on Eric Liddell ( <a href="http://richdrama.com/NewsBlog/2008/10/olympic-hero-in-china.html">RichDrama.com/OlympicHeroinChina</a>). <br><br> Here are posts from this blog that tell how he has impacted my life: <br><br><a href="http://richswingle.blogspot.com/2006/02/laughter-from-27th-floor.html">Laughter from the 27th Floor</a><br><a href="http://richswingle.blogspot.com/2006/02/great-grandson-of-hudson-taylor.html">Great Grandson of Hudson Taylor</a><br><a href="http://richswingle.blogspot.com/2006/05/jim-hudson-taylor-follow-up.html">Jim Hudson Taylor Follow-up</a><br><a href="http://richswingle.blogspot.com/2007/01/happy-birthday-uncle-eric.html">Happy Birthday, Uncle Eric</a><br><a href="http://richdrama.com/NewsBlog/2008/08/profound-evening.html">A Profound Evening</a><br><br> Jim served for 11 years as general director of <a href="http://www.omf.org/">OMF</a>, which was founded by Jim's great grandfather in 1865 as China Inland Mssion. I saw him on the first row, so after the play I thought I should at least acknowledge his presence. Much to my surprise he came to the stage. He said, &quot;Rich didn't think I was going to speak, but I had to tell you that today would have been Eric Liddell's 105th birthday.&quot; He went on to describe how Uncle Eric was a father figure to so many children who were separated from their families. <br><br> Dr. Taylor saw the play for the second time, and he brought his wife, Leone, and their grandson. I introduced him to the audience after the show as Jim Hudson Taylor, V, but that's this young man's cousin. This great-great-great grandson of Hudson Taylor is Devin Taylor Alsin. He attends University of Washington in Seattle (the only place I ever came in last in a race: steeplechase against some big schools). Devin is here to study finances for a semester. I was quite honored to hear how much he enjoyed the play. I told the audience that he may not have the name, but I'm sure he carries the mantle to accomplish great things for the Lord. </div></div></div>
