He opened by sharing his testimony of studying at Cornell University as an atheist and hearing Carl Sagan teach about what life is. Dr. Guillen found the answer unsatisfying, and he searched a variety of spiritual answers that didn't line up with what he was learning about science. A Valentine's Day card slipped under his door led to a reading of the Bible with the "best looking girl on campus" and an understanding that science and the Bible are confirming each other's world views. He later wrote Amazing Truths: How Science and the Bible Agree. He told us the more science progresses the more clear that this is the case. He says the things we disagree about are really minor, and the more science develops the more they will confirm each other. "Truth doesn't cancel out Truth," he said.

He spent the bulk of his time with us talking about his new book, The End of Life as We Know It: Ominous News From the Frontiers of Science. He believes the new advances in science will bring a pall over the land worse than the invention of the nuclear bomb: "This stuff just takes it an exponential step further." He ended on a high note: The Christian voice is essential as scientists are, even now, using their reason to lead them to create interspecial chimeras and the like. He believes for us not to fall into oblivion, a Golden Age of Christianity must be on the rise. He closed with, "We can provide hope to a scared world."

After getting his Ph.D. in physics, mathematics and astronomy from Cornell University, Dr. Guillen went on to teach at Harvard and became the ABC News Science Editor, and through that post he appeared regularly on Good Morning America, 20/20, Nightline and World News Tonight. He asked if I could get the word out to my nonunion contacts in case the visas did not come through since just about everyone besides Rachel and I were coming from the UK. This was the first time they invited people to watch the process, so dozens of observers were signed up, coming to Mt. Morris, NY, from as far as North Dakota.

Nathan "Nato" Jacobson and I have
been a part of four films together.

I sent out about 350 emails to students and colleagues who turned in 189 auditions. John and executive producer Mark Hamby said they had perfect peace about the situation and were sure the visas would come through but if not, God would provide. When the final word came that the visas were denied John and team went through all the auditions in two days, normally a two-week process! Patrick Powell the director of Escape from the Eagle's Nest found him on an internet search. Akmal lived his first twelve years in Southern Afghanistan, where the story takes place! He translated passages from The Sermon on the Mount, Revelation and Isaiah into Pashto, and then he came up with a tune inspired by music from his homeland and recorded himself singing the Scripture while he played keyboards underneath it.

John Fornof and I in London where
he directed me in The Dragon and
the Raven.

We were portraying the Afghanis who began by shouting down the foreigner. Then, as they were hearing words of life in their heart language, sung with a familiar tune they quieted down, and slowly started to join, humming the tune. I got to direct small groups who joined as the Scripture moved along. Once all of them had joined in, something extraordinary occurred. As had happened when he was singing the Pashto translation, David became overwhelmed with what was happening. We were all touched at a very deep level, so much so that everyone observing, including the director, were weeping. Hattie Kauffman spoke at the latest Mastermedia NYC event, and shared the story she kept buried for decades. While the Emmy-award-winning journalist was interviewing leaders of state, Olympians and astronauts she was still reeling from the pain of growing up in a family split by alcoholism. Her parents left her and her six siblings alone as the utilities slowly turned off: gas, electricity and eventually water.

Hungry for provision and stability she rose quickly in the ranks of television journalists, becoming the first Native American ever to file a report on a national network evening news broadcast. She was soon given a blank check to cover any stories anywhere in the world for Good Morning America. As with my bride, Hattie found it all leaving her empty inside. She turned to alcohol, and then to AA, but each bandaid she put on her soul couldn't bring the real healing.

Then one day she was in a hotel and sensed a hand on her forehead, like a Parent's warm touch. When she opened her eyes it was gone. The next day she tried to replicate everything that had led up to that moment in order to repeat the experience, but there was nothing. As she was giving up, she heard church bells ringing. She looked across the street and there was a church. She went right over only to find them letting out. But she followed some upstream, where they knelt at an altar. She followed their lead, and felt the pastor's hand on her forehead, and it was exactly the same experience she'd had the day before, and she knew the Lord Jesus Christ was confirming that He was calling her to Himself.

She said she was the least likely candidate to follow the Lord: A Native American raised with stories of missionaries going hand-in-hand with the land-grabbers and a journalist in a culture that's "too smart for God." But she saw that it was only Jesus Christ and what He did on the Cross that could heal her at the deepest places of her pain. She saw that though missionaries to her Nez Perce people may have been used by those with horrible motives, the message the missionaries brought was still Truth. She knew the Lord looked right past the veneer of her success and saw the hurting little girl, trembling in fear that it would all turn off like the utilities of her childhood.

Her story of how that Healing touch has transformed her life and given her peace and joy is told in her autobiography Falling into Place.

Soon taking applications for the Rocky Mountain Christian Filmmakers Camp and Engage Rio.

It's the kind of fairy tail that points right to life in the Kingdom.

It's a brilliant story beautifully told.

As a part of the opening sequence you'll see the book version of A Christmas Snow by Jim Stovall, who also penned the novel for The Lamp and The Ultimate Gift. (By the way the film version of The Ultimate Gift was cast by Bev Holloway, who has taught a number of times at MasterWorks.) A couple of other nice touches: The director makes his cameo as the "Handsome Jogger". Danny Cahill, who was the biggest loser on The Biggest Loser, played the food critic in A Christmas Snow, and a guy at the gym in The Lamp. And in both films Jim Stovall, who can't see, plays a driver.

Now I have to get back to that opening sequence: None of the characters spoke for six minutes, but the way the story unfolded without words was masterful.

http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=000000&IS2=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=richdramacom-20&o=1&p=8&l=as4&m=amazon&f=ifr&ref=ss_til&asins=B005AVIS6C

I'm weeping like a blubbering idiot! I just finished reading Mac Nelson's Memoirs of a Hollywood Adventure. The last time I wept this hard while reading something was when I read the same conclusion to Mac's manuscript before it went to press.

Insert from March 2015: It just made the cover of Christian Filmworks Magazine, which also included an article on Phillip Telfer, who runs the Christian Worldview Film Festival!
I met Mac when I first moved to New York City. The stories in his book are the ones that inspired me as I was first starting out as a professional actor. Mac's the best storyteller I've ever heard, and every time I introduce someone to Mac I beg him to tell one story after the next. Now they're all (well most of them are) in this fabulous book, and Mac's writing is even better than his storytelling! I found myself laughing or crying on almost every page.

Here's a great online review:

Yes, there are the requisite references to his personal experiences with the famous and the infamous--Was Jerry Lewis a "nice guy" or not, what was Roy Rogers really like, are Hollywood producers just like the movies portray them, and just who was that blood soaked young man Mac enountered running down the street the night a famous Hollywood murder took place? This book is fun to read as a true and fascinating tale of one young man's journey from backwater Missisippi to Tinseltown, What makes it special is that its more than just an account of what its like to land broke and alone on Hollywood Blvd and trying to make it BIG in the movies. It's also an insightful, heartwarming coming of age story--a journey of insight discovered and maturity found that results in the acheivement of a kind of spiritual Oscar--for "best human being". If you like stories about Hollywood, if you ever wondered what it would have been like if you had sought your big break in the movies, and especially if you are a young person planning a career in film you will want (strike that...you NEED) to read this book.
David Bloodgood
Orlando, FL

You'll also love Mac's other book, Waiting for My Fingers.
